"The scriptural reminder that 'the worth of souls is great in the sight of God'
(D&C 18:10) takes on new meaning to those involved in finding lost sheep and
helping to rekindle their faith. The joy felt in heaven when a lost child is
found and brought back is echoed in the hearts of faithful, caring
undershepherds. These shepherds say that many who have left the fold come to
realize that life without Christ is a perpetual twilight. The shepherds also
speak of loving parents who pray that someone will find a prodigal son or
daughter, of tears of joy and gladness at rediscovery, and of the prodigal's
reawakened desire to sup again at the table of the Lord. It is a great miracle."

"It is because of their understanding of this doctrine of the worth of souls
that our Lord's ministers go forth with all the energy and capacity they
have to labor in the vineyard, pleading with men to repent and save their
souls, that they may have eventual eternal joy in the Father's kingdom."

Testament Commentary," 3 vols. [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1965-1973], 1:394

"Each of us and our lives are important to God. We need to be constantly
aware of the fact that we are children of God. He knows us. He hears us. He
loves us. His church, His truths, and His eternal dwelling places are for
those who love Him, keep His commandments, and continue in His word. We need
to constantly remember that faith in God is reflected in faith in oneself,
and faith in oneself is manifest by one's actions."

"This is our first interest as a church-to save and exalt the souls of the
children of men. There is no richer program anywhere in the world than we
have in the Church today for the building of men and women and providing the
answers to the problems that face parents, families, and individuals. It is
a program that is needed today as never before."

"The elect will not be deceived. However, many others will be. (Matthew
24:11; Mark 13:22.) The elect who hear the living prophets will be blessed,
for 'he that receiveth a prophet in the name of the prophet shall receive a
prophet's reward.' (Matthew 10:41.) Since the rewards for bringing one soul
to God include great joy 'with him in the kingdom of my Father,' how
marvelous to contemplate one's joy with many such souls! (D&C 18:15.) Those
who have stood forth and shone forth, the living prophets (and those who
have received them), will, promised Daniel, 'shine as the brightness of the
firmament' and 'they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever
and ever.' (Daniel 12:3.) Who, in the depths of his soul, would not want to
share in this, the prophet's reward?" —
