"In the light of the terrible waste of money for the use of these harmful
substances, the injury to the human body through their use, and the spiritual
uplift that comes to those who keep their bodies clean through abstaining from
their use, how can one question the source whence this revelation, the Word of
Wisdom, came? It was far ahead of the scientific thought of its day. It must
have, and did, come from God." — LeGrand
Richards, "A Marvelous Work and a Wonder," [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co.,
1950], p. 366

"Parents, these are not the times for weak attempts and half measures, but
for the full strength of righteous, prayerful, God-fearing effort to walk
ourselves, and to lead our children, along the paths of sobriety and
chastity." — J. Reuben Clark, "Messages
of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,"
6 vols. (Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1965-75), 6: 173

"If you would escape from the devastations when God's judgments descend upon
the wicked, as in the days of the children of Israel, you must remember and
do what the Lord commands: '...all saints who remember to keep and do these
sayings'-meaning keep His great law of health, known as the Word of
Wisdom-and in addition thereto walk 'in obedience to the commandments,'
which would include honesty, moral purity, together with all the laws of the
celestial kingdom, then 'the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the
children of Israel, and not slay them.' (D&C 89:18, 21)"

Places," [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1974], p. 24

"You will add to your knowledge temperance. It must accompany knowledge
because all excesses are corroding, debasing, debilitating. For this reason
the Lord God gave us the Word of Wisdom. Be temperate."

"I know it is not necessary to be talking to our families all the time about
the Word of Wisdom, if we set a proper example ourselves; but if we do not
set such an example, then we have to be continually talking in order to
counteract the influence of our own example. I feel that fathers will have
much to answer for in these matters; for if a man takes a correct course in
this direction, his wife and his children will follow his example. God has
said that those who will observe this counsel shall have wisdom given to
them, even great treasures of wisdom. And these are the men we want-men of
wisdom. And will you have wisdom if you take this course? Just as sure as
God has said so; for His word will not fail. And those who observe the Word
of Wisdom will be distinguished among this people because of the wisdom that
God will give them. God will give them the blessings that He has promised,
and He will preserve them." — George Q.
Cannon, "Avoiding the Perils of Apostasy," Parowan Stake Conference, Monday,
June 20, 1892
