"A saving testimony of the Book of Mormon will never come from a spectacular
historical or archaeological find. If the Lord meant for our testimonies to be
based on physical, historical evidence other than scripture, he would send
Moroni with the golden plates." — Glenn L.
Pace, "The Elusive Balance," Tambuli, Feb. 1988, p. 43

"A strange aura of mystery and excitement seems to hover about the crumbling
monuments of those almost unknown people. As Latter-day Saints, we are
particularly sensitive to it, perhaps because we are keenly aware of so much
there that relates to peoples of the Book of Mormon: their religious
practices, such as baptism; their belief in a bearded white god; their
tremendous architectural achievements; their agricultural developments;
their exquisite arts and crafts; their beautiful works in gold and other
metals. Conjectures? Yes. The stuff theories are made of. But the physical
remains of these pre-Columbian cultures will one day fit together to
increase our understanding of the Book of Mormon peoples."

Peoples," Ensign, Sept. 1972, p. 43

"This [power of the Holy Ghost] must ever be the chief source of evidence
for the truth of the Book of Mormon. All other evidence is secondary to
this, the primary and infallible. No arrangement of evidence, however
skilfully ordered; no argument, however adroitly made, can ever take its
place; for this witness of the Holy Spirit to the soul of man for the truth
of the Nephite volume of scripture, is God’s evidence to the truth; and will
ever be the chief reliance of those who accept the Book of Mormon, and
expect to see its acceptance extended throughout the world."

after Truth," Ensign, Mar. 1986, p. 56

"There is irrefutable evidence to show both the correctness of the
translation and the Lord’s hand in it. The Three Witnesses, Oliver Cowdery,
David Whitmer, and Martin Harris, bore record that the voice of God declared
unto them that the book had been translated by his power. Their testimony
still appears at the front of each copy of the Book of Mormon. Furthermore,
in a June 1829 revelation given to the three men through the Prophet, the
Lord confirmed that Joseph had translated all that he had been commanded to
do and that it was a true translation. (See D&C 17:6.)"
