"Jesus made saving repentance possible and He made baptism meaningful." — John H. Groberg, "The Lord's Wind," Ensign, November 1993, p. 26

(8/19/98)
"Do you remember the feeling you had when you were baptized — that sweet, clean feeling of a pure soul, having been forgiven, washed clean through the merits of the Savior? If we partake of the sacrament worthily, we can feel that way regularly, for we renew that covenant, which includes his forgiveness." — John H. Groberg, "The Beauty and Importance of the Sacrament," Ensign, May 1989, p. 38

(3/9/05)
"Why is the writing of personal and family histories so important? There are many reasons....

"There is something eternal in the very nature of writing, as is so graphically illustrated by the scriptures themselves. In a very real sense, our properly written histories are a very important part of our family scripture and become a great source of spiritual strength to us and to our posterity." - John H. Groberg, "Writing Your Personal and Family History," Ensign, May 1980, p. 48

(10/4/05)
"Why do we keep on hoping? It is said that 'hope springs eternal,' and it's good it does, for it gives us something to live for, to strive for, to hope for. But why? Why does hope spring eternal? Why do we keep coming back and back after so many defeats? Simply because God is eternal and God is hope (as well as love-and they may be the same) and we are His children. Therefore, as He is the embodiment of hope and has a fullness of hope, there is planted deep within each of us something we cannot deny, for it is part of the very essence of ourselves; and that is what we call, in mortality, hope." - John H. Groberg, "Hope," p.48

1/15/06
"I learned that as we sing the sacrament hymns with real intent, phrases like 'How great the wisdom and the love' or 'Dearly, dearly has he loved! And we must love him too' will swell our hearts with love and gratitude (see How Great the Wisdom and the Love, Hymns, no. 195; There Is a Green Hill Far Away, Hymns, no. 194). As we sincerely listen to the sacrament prayers, phrases such as 'always remember him,' 'keep his commandments,' 'have his Spirit to be with them' will fill our hearts with an overwhelming desire to be better (see D&C 20:77, 79). Then when we partake of the bread and the water with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, I know we can feel and even hear those most wondrous words 'I love you. I love you.'" - John H. Groberg, "The Power of God's Love," Ensign (CR), November 2004, p.9

1/29/06
"Just as clean wires, properly connected, are required to carry electrical power, so clean hands and pure hearts are required to carry priesthood power. Filth and grime slow or prevent the flow of electrical power. Unclean thoughts and actions interfere with individual priesthood power. When we are humble, clean, and pure of hand, heart, and mind, nothing righteous is impossible. An ancient Oriental saying declares, 'If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.'" - John H. Groberg, "Priesthood Power," Ensign (CR), May 2001, p.43

2/16/07
"Jesus Christ was filled with unfathomable love as He endured incomprehensible pain, cruelty, and injustice for us. Through His love for us, He rose above otherwise insurmountable barriers. His love knows no barriers. He invites us to follow Him and partake of His unlimited love so we too may rise above the pain and cruelty and injustice of this world and help and forgive and bless." - John H. Groberg, "The Power of God's Love," Ensign (CR), November 2004, p.9

12/13/08
"When we understand who God is, who we are, how He loves us, and what His plan is for us, fear evaporates. When we get the tiniest glimpse of these truths, our concern over worldly things vanishes. To think we actually fall for Satan’s lies that power, fame, or wealth is important is truly laughable—or would be were it not so sad." - John H. Groberg, "The Power of God’s Love," Ensign (CR), November 2004, p.9

5/27/10
"I know He lives. I know He loves us. I know we can feel His love here and now. I know His voice is one of perfect mildness which penetrates to our very center. I know He smiles and is filled with compassion and love. I know He is full of gentleness, kindness, mercy, and desire to help. I love Him with all my heart. I testify that when we are ready, His pure love instantly moves across time and space, reaches down, and pulls us up from the depths of any tumultuous sea of darkness, sin, sorrow, death, or despair we may find ourselves in and brings us into the light and life and love of eternity." - John H. Groberg, "The Power of God's Love," Ensign (CR), November 2004, p. 9

6/2/11
"We learn that friends and neighbors come and go but family is forever, and as we learn this, we find that we are eternally our brother’s keeper and we begin to realize how much help we need. How we should thank God for the opportunity of family prayer!" - John H. Groberg, "The Power of Family Prayer," Ensign (CR) April 1982

9/23/11
Does the Lord love and bless those who keep the Sabbath day holy? I testify that he does in eternally meaningful ways. I further testify that when we eventually see things through the proper perspective of eternal truth, we will be amazed at how much we were blessed in important—though often unperceived—ways through keeping the Sabbath holy; and to our sorrow we may sense how many blessings we kept from ourselves by not consistently keeping the Sabbath day holy. - John H. Groberg, "The Power of Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy," Ensign (CR) October 1984

2/14/12
I remember reading a poster once that said, “A ship in a harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are made for.” I think that applies to our lives. We may pass through troubled times, but if we constantly seek nothing but physical security, we’re probably not doing what we should. We need to seek the spiritual security of knowing we are doing the Lord’s will. Sometimes that will not give us all the physical security we may desire, but it will give us all we need. - John H. Groberg, "What Are You Doing Here?" Ensign, January 1987

2/16/12
If we wish to come unto Jesus through the sacrament, we must believe in Him, rely on Him, repent of our sins, take His name upon us by being baptized in His Church, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and faithfully follow Christ all of our lives.

The invitation to come unto the Savior is universal. Everyone is included—men, women, and children; old and young alike. None are barred except by themselves. - John H. Groberg, "The Beauty and Importance of the Sacrament," Friend, October 1990

5/11/12
God’s love fills the immensity of space; therefore, there is no shortage of love in the universe, only in our willingness to do what is needed to feel it. To do this, Jesus explained we must “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, … soul, … strength, and … mind; and thy neighbour as thyself” (Luke 10:27). - John H. Groberg, "The Power of God's Love," Ensign (CR) November 2004

9/12/13
Why is the writing of personal and family histories so important?…

Writing our histories will certainly help us keep our eyes on the most important of all goals—even the goal of eternal life. - John H. Groberg, "Writing Your Personal and Family History," Ensign (CR) May 1980

2/12/14
I love the Savior. I feel that as he hung upon the cross and looked out over the dark scene, he saw more than mocking soldiers and cruel taunters. He saw more than crying women and fearful friends. He remembered and saw even more than women at wells or crowds on hills or throngs by seashores. He saw more, much more. He, who knows all and has all power, saw through the stream of time. His huge, magnanimous, loving soul encompassed all eternity and took in all people and all times and all sins and all forgiveness and all everything. Yes, he saw down to you and to me and provided us an all-encompassing opportunity to escape the terrible consequences of death and sin. - John H. Groberg, “The Beauty and Importance of the Sacrament,” Ensign (CR) May 1989

3/4/14
Jesus Christ was filled with unfathomable love as He endured incomprehensible pain, cruelty, and injustice for us. Through His love for us, He rose above otherwise insurmountable barriers. His love knows no barriers. He invites us to follow Him and partake of His unlimited love so we too may rise above the pain and cruelty and injustice of this world and help and forgive and bless. - John H. Groberg, “The Power of God’s Love,” Ensign (CR) November 2004

9/22/14
Oh, brethren, please don’t sell your precious priesthood birthright for a mess of X- or R-rated pottage. Remember, the sand castles we build on the beaches of mortality, no matter how elaborate, will eventually be washed away by the tide. Only purity of hand, heart, and mind will allow us to tap into the ultimate power of the priesthood to truly bless others and eventually be able to build eternal mansions more beautiful and lasting than we can presently imagine. - John H. Groberg, “Priesthood Power,” Ensign (CR) May 2001

11/11/14
Remember, all that we are commanded to do in this life is patterned after that of a better life. Do you think it a strange thought that maybe part of the power of family prayer is in the fact that we are part of a heavenly family, that they are interested in us, and that by tying in with them some way we get hold of something much bigger than ourselves? - John H. Groberg, "The Power of Family Prayer," Ensign (CR), May 1982, p.50

7/13/15
Prayers can only be truly effective in a relationship of deep trust. He already trusts us; it is up to us to raise our level of trust in Him so that honest communication can take place and the relationship can be fully effective. I thought of the relationship between the Father and the Son. What courage, what trust, what faith, what love they had for each other, as exemplified by the scripture: "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt" (Matthew 26:39). What an example to strive for and follow! - John H. Groberg, "The Fire of Faith," p. 31

12/5/15
We do not develop love with anger or jealousy or selfishness or unrighteous dominion, or in trying to second guess God and His ways—we only develop it in serving (loving) others with all of our hearts. To love God with all of our hearts, and our fellowman as ourselves, has always been and will always be not only the best way but the only way for achieving the love we need to eventually enter the celestial kingdom. - John H. Groberg, "In the Eye of the Storm," p.278

2/17/16
I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. I testify that in our day [the prophet] is the man whose eyes see the light that can and will save us and the world. When all about us are sinking in darkness and fear and despair, when destruction seems close and the raging fury of men and demons ensnares us in seemingly insoluble problems, listen as he calmly says, "There is the light. This is the way.” I testify that he will so guide us safely home if we will but listen and obey. - John H. Groberg, "There Is the Light," Ensign (CR), November 1976, p.44

5/30/16
When filled with God's love, we can do and see and understand things that we could not otherwise do or see or understand. Filled with His love, we can endure pain, quell fear, forgive freely, avoid contention, renew strength, and bless and help others in ways surprising even to us. - John H. Groberg, “The Power of God's Love,” Ensign (CR), November 2004, p.9

6/21/16
That taught me something important. Sometimes we pray for things that will benefit us but may hurt others. We may pray for a particular type of weather, or to preserve someone's life, when that answer to our prayer may hurt someone else. That's why we must always pray in faith, because we can't have true, God-given faith in something that is not according to His will. If it's according to His will, all parties will benefit. I learned to pray for a good wind and the ability to get there safely, not necessarily a tail wind. - John H. Groberg, “In the Eye of the Storm,” p.175
