The LDS Daily WOOL© Archive - Sexual Purity

"You precious young women, to begin with you must practice virtue in its highest sense. Virtue has many definitions, such as moral excellence, right action and thinking, goodness of character, or chastity in women. The First Presidency has said: 'How glorious and near to the angels is youth that is clean; this youth has joy unspeakable here and eternal happiness hereafter. Sexual purity is youth's most precious possession; it is the foundation of all righteousness.' This implies that the virtue of young women should be equal to the angels. You cannot become great women if you are not also good women, 'women whose virtue makes them shine in a crowd.' You will become great women if you are united in the angelic cause of doing good and if you hunger and thirst after righteousness. The Savior said, 'Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.' If we do not, then nothing else really matters." — James E. Faust, "How Near to the Angels," "Ensign," May 1998, p. 95

"What does that mean? It means you take upon yourself the name of the Lord and use His gift of procreative powers only as He has decreed. These powers are not to be abused in lust, adultery, fornication, or perverted behavior. A great purpose of the Lord's atonement is to qualify you for eternal marriage and everlasting joy with your predecessors and your posterity. Satan would like to destroy the family and all that holds it together. While the world descends to the level of concern for 'safe sex,' your standard is sacred sex-within the bounds of holy matrimony as intended by the Lord." — Russell M. Nelson, "Standards of the Lord's Standard-Bearers," "Ensign," Aug. 1991, p. 10

"One of the strongest interpretations of being pure in heart has to do with sexual purity. We are told to 'let virtue garnish [our] thoughts unceasingly.' (D&C 121:45.)" — Robert E. Wells, "The Beatitudes: Pattern for Coming unto Christ," "Ensign," Dec. 1987, p. 10

"Help your sons and daughters to understand that we marry in the temple. We live to be worthy to go there. Teach your children to take a firm stand regarding sexual purity. We have a great song: 'Who's on the Lord's side? Who? Now is the time to show.' (Hymns, no. 175.) Teach your children to be on the Lord's side of morality. The would-be destroyers of our youth who are pushing sex for pleasure only or cheap entertainment have not reckoned with the intense spirit of the Mormon woman who has a glimpse of the eternities." — David B. Haight, "From Age Eighteen On," "Ensign," Apr. 1976, p. 67

"Elder Neal A. Maxwell: 'The world seeks to control the diseases flowing from sexual immorality but without honoring the principles of fidelity and chastity. The world in its wisdom constantly seeks to accommodate the natural man, while gospel wisdom constantly urges us to put off the natural man. (See Mosiah 3:19.) This is a pivotal point, and it makes all the difference!' ('The Inexhaustible Gospel,' Ensign, April 1993, pp. 71-72)." - "What Prophets and Apostles Teach about Chastity and Fidelity," Ensign, October 1998, p. 40

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stands irrevocably committed to the observance of sexual purity. It recognizes no double standard of morality. It demands the same standard of virtue from its men that it does from its women members, and recognizes no circumstance or condition which justifies sexual association except in virtuous and legal wedlock. This the Church recognizes to be not only approved of the Lord but in direct compliance with his command.” - Anthony W. Ivins, “Conference Report,” April 1930, First Day–Morning Meeting, p. 18

"While we are in the world, we must not be of the world. Any attempts being made by the schools or places of entertainment to flaunt sexual perversions, which can do nothing but excite to experimentation, must find among the priesthood in this church a vigorous and unrelenting defense through every lawful means that can be employed." - Harold B. Lee, "Admonitions for the Priesthood of God," Ensign (CR), January 1973, p. 104
